What to look for in a quality heavyweight hoodie
GSM matters. Construction matters. The graphic matters. Here is what separates a hoodie worth $70 from one that is not.
The hoodie market is full of blanks. Most brands pick a manufacturer, order a pallet, add a logo, and call it a product. The result looks like a hoodie. Six months in, it does not feel like one.
Here is what to look for when you want a piece that holds.
GSM: start here
GSM is grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric. A 280gsm hoodie is what you get from a fast-fashion retailer. It pills fast. The weight does not hold after washing.
For a heavyweight hoodie worth the price, you want 400gsm minimum. At 450gsm, the fabric has body. It hangs correctly. It keeps its shape after repeated wash cycles instead of going soft and shapeless.
Drop 01 runs at 450gsm. That number is in the product specs for a reason.
Construction: the interior tells you everything
Turn any hoodie inside out before you buy it. A brushed interior means the cotton fibres are raised, which creates an insulating layer. An unbrushed interior is smoother, sometimes slightly rough. You will feel the difference when the temperature drops.
Check the ribbing at the cuffs and hem. It should have clear elasticity. If it stretches out and does not recover, it will not last.
Seams should be flat and consistent. Double-stitched is better. If the shoulder or side seam looks hurried, it was.
The graphic: screen print or skip it
Heat transfer graphics peel. You have seen it: the cracked chest print on a three-year-old piece that looks ten years old.
Screen printing is the standard for any brand that takes the graphic seriously. The ink goes into the fabric, not onto it. It survives the wash. It does not crack when the piece is folded.
The graphic should also be sized for the chest. A small logo centred on a large blank is not a graphic. It is a stamp.
The cut: proportions are everything
Boxy and oversized are not the same thing. Boxy means the body width is wide relative to the length. Oversized means the garment is scaled up from a fitted silhouette.
Dropped shoulders and a relaxed body width are what make a heavyweight hoodie read as intentional rather than just large. The proportion matters as much as the weight.
